The American War Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten is the sole U.S. war cemetery in the Netherlands. The cemetery is the final resting place of 8,289 U.S. WWII soldiers, of whom many died during Operation Market Garden in September 1944 or during the Allied push into Nazi-Germany. Among those buried in the cemetery are six recipients of the Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. military award for valor, and four women. Major General Maurice Rose, commander of the 3rd Armored Division, is the highest ranking person buried in this cemetery. Besides those who rest here, the names of 1,722 missing soldiers have been recorded at the Walls of the Missing.
Ever since 1945, the graves of the soldiers buried here have been adopted by grateful citizens. For more information about the 'Adopt-A-Grave' program for this cemetery, please visit the website of the Stichting Adoptie Graven Amerikaanse Begraafplaats Margraten (Foundation for Adopting Graves American Cemetery Margraten) at www.adoptiegraven-margraten.nl. They maintain the program for this cemetery. If you like to learn more about the founding of the cemetery, visit the Akkers van Margraten website. More information and photos can also be found on the website of the American Battle Monuments Commission.
In close cooperation with the American Battle Monuments Commission, the Fields of Honor Foundation organizes the biennial The Faces of Margraten tribute at the cemetery. Every two years, volunteers come out to the cemetery to decorate the graves and names on the Walls of the Missing with the soldiers' personal photos, giving a face to their names. This happens during the first week of May, when the Netherlands observe their own Memorial Day. The next tribute is scheduled for 2021. Learn more about this solemn tribute by visiting its website.
The cemetery is open daily to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except December 25 and January 1. The cemetery's visiting address is Amerikaanse Begraafplaats 1 in Margraten, the Netherlands. To contact the cemetery, please click here.
